Hand picked by Huynh and Price, the exposed- bark, live-edge slab used for the couple’s table is one-of-a-kind.

Tina Huynh
& Garth Price

Following the rules has never been Tina Huynh and Garth Price’s thing, particularly when it comes to interior design. After purchasing their first home a couple years ago, they approached Homestead Furniture with some big ideas — notably aluminum metalwork wall accents, live edge light fixtures and furniture for just about every room in the house. And without hesitation, Homestead delivered. “They never told us, ‘no, we can’t do it,’ ” says Huynh. “They just found a way and made it happen.”

The desire for craftsmanship and quality without sacrificing style was what brought Huynh and Price to Homestead in the first place. “We wanted something that was going to last forever,” says Huynh. “Functionality is huge for me. I’m not going to buy a piece just because it’s pretty — it has to work in our home.”

One of the most show-stopping pieces in their home is the dining table: a massive, live-edge tabletop inlaid with bird carvings and perched atop an intricate, metal base with a scrollwork pattern. The accompanying mixed-media chairs are something to behold. “The metal with wood was something they had never done before in these chairs,” says Huynh. “Working with Rose from Homestead, we were able to customize anything. She was so knowledgable about how things came together.”

A lot of the other Amish places have very similar styles. This table was something I hadn’t seen at any of the other places.”

Natalie &
Charlie Yang

Furnishing a new house is no small task. For Natalie and Charlie Yang, a dining table wasn’t at the top of their priority list after purchasing a 1920s Craftsman nearly two years ago. “The dining room actually sat empty for a year,” says Natalie, who worked on the rest of the downstairs with her husband. “But we really wanted to start making this a home for hosting holidays and other things.”

After striking out at a handful of other Amish furniture stores, the Yangs found a piece they loved at Homestead. “I remember walking past this table and being really drawn to it,” says Natalie. “A lot of the other Amish places have very similar styles — there’s not a lot of diversity. This table was something I hadn’t seen at any of the other places.” Working with a designer at Homestead, the couple was able to hand-pick from over 3,000 colors and finishes, along with fabric for the chairs they selected. “This was an investment,“ says Natalie, “And we wanted to be confident in our choices. I appreciated that the designer spent time with us and reassured us that the colors and fabrics were the right ones.”

But what really sold it for them was the way it felt authentic to their home. “I love how it brings everything together,” says Natalie. “We have a fairly open concept house, and now it feels so seamless. It really completes our home. We’re not embarrassed to have people over anymore!”

She’s confident the table will stay in the family for years to come. “We think of this as an heirloom piece.”

Clean lines and a dark stain finish are freshened up with crisp, light upholstery — complementing the Yangs’ 1920s Craftsman-style house.

The Murphys describe their style as a mix of traditional and contemporary, with clean lines and just a touch of farmhouse.

Linda &
Bob Murphy

After losing most of their furniture in a devastating house flood a couple years ago, Linda and Bob Murphy pretty much had to start from scratch restoring their long-time home. They packed up what they could and moved into an apartment for 17 months while their house was renovated.

Today, they’re back at home and refurnishing little by little, determined to pick the right pieces the first time. When it came to buying a kitchen table, the Murphys started their search at a big-name furniture store, where they quickly realized it wouldn’t be worth the investment. “My husband asked, ‘why are we paying this much for something that’s not solid wood?’ ” says Linda.

That’s when a contractor she had worked with recommended Homestead to her, and she loved that it was a local company with a highly regarded reputation. “I had gone everywhere,” she says. “I just knew when I walked in there and sat down with LaVern that it was a place I could trust.”

Having a pretty good idea of what they wanted their table to look like, the Murphys worked with a designer to build a completely custom piece, choosing everything from style and wood species to stain color and finish sheen. One big plus for the couple was that Homestead could customize chairs to perfectly match the table. “When I was shopping around, I noticed most places don’t have quality chairs,” says Linda. “Homestead’s chairs are so well made — that really drew me to them.”

The Murphys are so happy with their custom table that they’re planning on using Homestead again as they continue to rebuild their home. “I definitely will always go back there,” says Linda. “I’m not just going out to buy something that isn’t worth it. I can’t believe their craftsmanship — it’s like artwork.”

Jill &
John Bisco

When Jill and John Bisco walked into the showroom at Homestead, their eyes were immediately drawn to one of the glorious live-edge slabs lining the back wall. “I saw it and just knew,” says Jill, “I found my dining room table.” In fact, they’d come for a factory tour and had no intention of buying furniture that day.

“We actually purchased a table the year before,” says Jill. But it never felt quite right. After working with Homestead to custom design the table to fit the space, everything just fell into place. Once they picked the slab, they saw a metal base they liked but in a different format — it was just a matter of fusing the two together.

“Chris from Homestead was so good,” says Jill. “He drew it right up. He took these ideas we had and turned it into something perfect.”

Now proud owners of a stunning live-edge dining table with a modern metal base, an accent table made from the same slab, dining chairs and a TV stand with a built-in wine rack all from Homestead, the Biscos finally feel like their space is complete.

“I wouldn’t say we have a specific style,” says Jill. “We get the things we like if it catches our eye.” Often those are pieces with a handmade touch or a story behind it. Now they have something with both.

The Biscos’ accent table is both modern and rustic, made using the same live-edge slab as their dining table and placed atop handforged metal legs.

Dusk & Dawn

Homestead’s new outdoor living showroom is the first of its kind, and features both daytime and nighttime vignettes — something that is hard to describe, and truly must be experienced to understand.

Why did Homestead decide to branch out into outdoor furniture?

Outdoor space is now considered another room in your home — people are using and setting it up just like their living rooms. We wanted to help our customers design the perfect outdoor space in a similar way that we do for indoor spaces.

What was your inspiration behind the outdoor living showroom?

Outdoor spaces are enjoyed early in the morning to late in the evening and everything in between. It can be difficult to pick the perfect set of outdoor furniture that will look and feel right. We set out to create an extraordinary space that engages all your senses — we give our customers a sense of what that space will be like both during the day and after the sun has set.

What brands and materials can we expect to see?

We carry Jensen Leisure, an outdoor wood line that uses hard Ipe wood from sustainable forests out of Bolivia. We also carry Woodard, a durable aluminum line that has been around for over 100 years with soft seating and fire tables. Lloyd Flanders, a high-quality wicker producer with a lot of versatility, has also been around for over a century. With this combination of products, we can customize the style and functionality for each client. We’re also displaying our own outdoor living pieces with locally sourced live-edge slabs and cement tops and cast metal legs — fully customizable per Homestead’s standard.

What makes Homestead’s showroom unique?

What’s unique about the showroom is that we’ll have two separate areas — one displayed in full daylight and one in a twilight setting. Being able to experience the ambiance of sitting outside on a sunny day and warming up by a cozy fire in the evening will help customers visualize using their space in these ways. We’re really excited about this concept because it’s not something we’ve seen before in the market.

What excites you most about the outdoor living collection?

I’d say the ability to fully furnish an outdoor space for our clients wherever and however they need it. Our goal is to help people make their house a home, and this will bring us a big step closer to that.
